Exercise to Standardize MBARI Data Names
Note
These pages get created as the need arises, and are not carefully organized. The best way to learn what's enclosed is just by reading and following links.
Someday, we might have a good SnSiteMap.
Schedule
-
6/24 Meet @ 8:30 AM (MBARI Bldg G)
Overview
Over the past few months, several MBARI scientists and directors requested that a set of "standard names" be used for MBARI data variables. This page documents our team's initial efforts toward addressing that goal.
We welcome participation of data management teams from other institutions. Please contact John Graybeal for information on attending the meetings listed above. Or, you may want to edit these Wiki pages yourself. Your contributions are welcome.
Our Approach So Far
The team tried to specify what metadata describes a variable. We then identified which of those factors, or elements, would be useful in naming the variable. (Perhaps those 'most useful' elements could let us build names auto-magically from the components...?)
The team also identified many metadata elements which seemed less central to the variable's name, but which were still valuable for users of the data. That might be secondary to the main point of the exercise, but it's being maintained for future reference.
Throughout this process, we are documenting our progress on this Wiki, and attempting to provide up-to-date information about our results, lessons, and products.
To see where we are (might be?) going with this work, visit our DetailedPlan, which includes a detailed outline of the proposed tasks. The more immediate tasks are described in NextSteps.
See OurDocuments to obtain the Variable List spreadsheets as they have been developed.
